The ball shagger in flyball is the person who stands at the back of the runback area and gathers all of the tennis balls the dogs bring back into a wire basket, which is also called a "ball shagger." This may seem like a trivial role, but it is actually very helpful. Every race, within few minutes, 12 to 30 tennis balls end up rolling around the runback area. There are also dogs racing back and fourth, handlers sprinting back and sometimes running backward, with all of their attention focused back on their dog as it races. That runback area can be a very busy place.
